As my plan for 2018 was to read more books to learn and grow as a person – what better then to tell my readers how I liked them?
Chris Guillebeau has formerly written The $100 Startup, The Happiness of Pursuit, and The Art of Non-Conformity and is a New York Times bestseller author. He has has his own podacst Side Hustle school with more than two million downloads every month and as a result of his side-hustle and self-employment has had the chance of visiting every country in the world.
I have to admit that I had no idea who Chris Guillebeau was before getting this book. As a part of my new vision for 2018 I told my girlfriend that I wanted a very down-to-earth christmas gift this year. Nothing expensive, nothing fancy. Why not a book? We the Icelandic people are somewhat Booklovers I guess as there are more books published here per capita than in any other country in the world. That said I believe a good book is worth every penny. It’s just something about sitting down with a good book and turning the pages. Don’t get me wrong, I download Kindle books also and read them on my iPhone and iPad but holding a book is just a good feeling and it’s good to go offline once in while.
I told my girlfriend that she could pick whatever but preferably the book should be related to business, entrepreneurship or some kind of self-improvement. She was actually quite happy to get some guidance for my gift-shopping. To my pleasant surprise she chose this one.
The book is about exactly what it says on the cover: How to get an idea and turn it into an income in 27 days. The 27 day plan is laid out in 5 chapters (weeks) and around 250 pages. In the first week the book focuses on helping you come up with an “arsenal of ideas” that you can use as a pool to select the one that would suit your new business best. In week two you learn how to select the best idea out of that pool and turn it into an offer and in week three your aim is to find the target customer and explain to him why he can’t live without your offer/product. After planning you go into week four where your product or idea goes live to the market. In week 5 you watch your progress, refine and adjust according to your results. See what is working and what is not.
The author does his best to explain the idea of a side-hustle and how to become your own business owner even though you are still working a day job. There no requirements for you to have a MBA or Bachelor’s degree in finance for this book to work for you – all that is needed I would say is to be able to get an idea and then dedication. There is not a lot of technical jargon or phrases that are difficult to understand which makes this book a nice reading in my opinion.
The really good thing about this book is that it has many real world examples and stories about people that were successful with their side business even though they had limited resources like time and money. Those are usually the biggest hurdles when it comes to quitting your day job and starting to work for yourself. Of course with the internet it has become much easier for entrepreneurs to get their message out there. I would say that this book tackles both the online and offline business models with real stories about successful people. This way it’s easier to get ideas for what could possibly work and not work for the sake of the reader. It’s also laid out quite well with 27 steps people should take in order for their side-hustle to work for them.
The downside perhaps to this book in my opinion is that it doesn’t really cover what happens after (and if) your side hustle becomes a success. How to actually run the business. This book should be considered as the spark to a flame that your business needs to get going. It’s not a be all end all kind of book but rather a “beginners guide” to a side business that could potentially become full time if done correctly.
